Snowdonia artificial wave

Surf Snowdonia is the worlds first public Wave Garden, an artificial wave technology developed in Spain.  The wave pool is located in North Wales, UK and opens to the public tomorrow 1st August 2015. This week Surf Snowdonia’s SUP sponsors Starboard UK hosted Starboard International riders Zane Schweitzer, Izzi Gomez, Sean Poynter and Finn Mullen at Surf Snowdonia during the final testing stages of the wave.  SUPboarder was on location and captured some of the first SUP surfing action on the UK’s first artificial wave!

Surfers all over the world have been patiently waiting for the completion of this monumental project in the beautiful North Wales mountains.  In the week before opening four Starboard international riders were invited to this iconic wave pool to test out the wave.  Braving the chilly waters of North Wales were World SUP surfing champions Izzi Gomez and Sean Poynter,  2015 world title contender, and innovator of SUP surfing Zane Schweitzer and big wave charger Finn Mullen.

Starboard UK are SUP partners to the Surf Snowdonia project and are working closely with Surf Snowdonia to promote not only SUP surfing but flat water SUP on the stunning rivers and lakes in the surrounding areas and whitewater SUP on the technical rivers of North Wales.

Artificial waves bring a new dimension to surfing – incredible consistency means you can learn fast and improve your skills whether you are a pro or a beginner – they present a great opportunity.  However, although they try to mimic perfection, they are also challenging to dial into and riders shouldn’t expect to shred on their first wave.  Learning to take off and ride this wave is challenging but when you break the barrier and if you have the right mindset you will be able to improve faster than ever before.

Starboard UK and Palm Equipment UK team rider Sam Ross gives his opinion of the wave, why its unique and why he will be using it in the future to better his SUP surfing.

The UK is surrounded by a huge coastline and has some incredible waves, but Surf Snowdonia still offers a incredible experience where you can surf identical waves on tap in a stunning location.  It makes surfing for beginners even more accessible, allows intermediates the ability to accelerate there progression and professionals another opportunity to master progressive moves and drive the sport forward.

The artificial wave revolution has reached us and its going to be very, very exciting….

Thats's nice...

to the unacquainted, the name probably compels visions of a Dr. Seuss character or something. But for those privy to the phenomenon these three funky syllables represents—the narrows at the mouth of the Sechelt Inlet on the remote Sunshine Coast of British Columbia—their utterance compels visions of a legendary paddler’s wonderland. With the turn of every tide, water rushes through the Skookumchuck narrows to create a standing wave feature unlike any other wave, rapid or bore in the world. That feature is the gold at the end of the rainbow, the final destination of a paddler’s dream pilgrimage.

Recently, river SUP hellman Luke Hopkins ventured the long and windy pilgrimage to Skook hoping to meet a massive tide swing at the narrows. And boy, oh boy, did he score. The above footage features clips from a single ride that lasted more than 15-minutes amid some of the best conditions Skookumchuck has to offer.

Where it all began...

DUKE KAHANAMOKU EARLY SUP | NEWLY RELEASED RARE FOOTAGE

As a waterman, a surfer, a standup paddler or an enthusiast of any activity involving riding boards on water, it is your duty to understand and share the legend of King Duke Kahanamoku. As a Hawaiian citizen, The Duke was long the sheriff of Honolulu, re-elected 12 times between 1934 and 1960 by a community who adored him. As an athlete, The Duke was an outstanding waterman—an Olympic swimmer and water polo player. As a pop star, The Duke was also a Hollywood actor. But how The Duke earned ultimate reverence among his fellow Hawaiians and generations of surfers to follow—reverence still upheld and respected with the utmost regard to this day—boils down to his contribution to the surfing world and his mission to spread the Aloha spirit across the globe. The ultimate Hawaiian legend, The Duke, along with friend and fellow pioneering Hawaiian surfer/standup paddler, George Freeth, is credited as the original godfather of surfing. He dedicated his life to being the pioneering ambassador of surfing and standup paddling, traveling the world, spreading the aloha spirit and giving the gift of wave riding to generations to follow.

This rare, recently discovered footage of Duke Kahanamoku performing what may well have been the first true recreational SUP surfing with friends at Waikiki Beach is a privilege for us modern day paddle surfers to marvel at, appreciate, and share with generations to come. All hail The Duke.

Wer es noch nicht wußte - SUPen ist gesund

Paddle boarding is a great all over body workout. Head to toe, every muscle is engaged in balancing on the board or during the paddle stroke with the bulk of the effort being done by the body’s ‘core’ muscles. As the name suggests, the core muscles are integral to the support and function of your whole body. A strong core is a strong body.

“It feels like you’re standing on an exercise ball, swimming and cycling at the same time!”

Stand up paddling has also become a go-to sport for athletes of all sports to cross train because of several key benefits of SUP:

  • Full body workout from head to toe
  • Balance, strength, endurance, co-ordination, flexibility, and core stability
  • Cardiovascular workout
  • Low impact
  • Outdoors
  • Above all, it’s a fun workout!

The best part? You don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from the amazing workout paddle boarding provides, it is available to everybody of all fitness levels on all bodies of water. Lakes, rivers, right through to the open ocean. With paddle boarding, everyone can get out, enjoy a full body workout and have fun while doing it!
